Wildcats Extend Winning Streak to Seven Against No. 24 Michigan State

EVANSTON, Ill. β No. 7 Northwestern extended its winning streak to seven on Friday afternoon with a 4-1 win vs. No. 24 Michigan State at Lakeside Field.
The Wildcats improve to 9-2 on the season and 2-0 in Big Ten play. The 'Cats were in control for the majority of the game, dominating the shots department, 22-10, and earning 10 penalty corners compared to five for the Spartans, all of which came in the fourth quarter.
Redshirt first-year Bente Baekers continued her hot streak, scoring twice in the fourth quarter to extend the Wildcats' lead. Baekers now leads the nation with 16 goals on the year and has scored in each of the Wildcats' nine wins this season, including eight goals over the last three games.
First-year Ana Medina Garcia had a breakout performance, scoring her first-career goal in the second half and then adding an assist on the final goal of the game. Senior Kirsten Mansfield scored the first goal of the game in the second quarter and also notched her 10th assist of the season, the most in the Big Ten.
Junior Florien Marcussen turned in a stellar performance in the net, recording a season-high seven saves. Northwestern has now held its opponent to two goals or fewer in each of their last nine games.
Friday's win marks the fifth ranked victory of the season for the 'Cats. They will look to improve that tally to six on Sunday as they welcome No. 9 Michigan to Lakeside Field for a marquee matchup starting at noon.
