Wildcats Score 10 Unanswered Runs, Down Ohio State, 13-5

4/5/2019 9:10:00 PM | Baseball

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Northwestern clawed back in the late innings at Ohio State on Friday night and downed the Buckeyes, 13-5, at Bill Davis Stadium in NU's first Big Ten road game of the season.

NU has won six of their last seven games and improves to 2-2 in Big Ten play. The victory was Northwestern's first when trailing after six innings and is only their second win when allowing 10 or more hits. The 13 Wildcat runs were tied for NU's most this season.

The Wildcats were led offensively by first baseman Willie Bourbon who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, a walk, and an RBI. Bourbon set a career high with two doubles.

infielder Jack Dunn reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk. Dunn also scored a run and added a stolen base en route to improving his Big Ten-leading .385 batting average.

Dunn's career hit tally improved to 202, tying him for 18th all-time in NU history with Jon Osborne (1980-83).

Infielder Shawn Goosenberg went 1-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI, and a double, extending his hitting streak to a team-best 10-straight games. Catcher Mike Trautwein went 2-for-5 with a career-best three runs scored.

Northwestern has scored first in every Big Ten game they have played this season. The 'Cats plated one in the first inning as Jack Dunn scored his team-best 25th run of the season after his brother, David, drove him in with a two-out single.

The Buckeyes evened up the contest in the bottom of the third after Brady Cherry hit an RBI single to left field. OSU proceeded to plate three more runs in the inning, ending the first third of the game with a 4-1 advantage.

The Wildcats quickly chimed back by scrapping across a pair of runs in the fourth inning, with runs scoring on an error and a wild pitch. OSU added one more, however, in their half of the fourth, and led, 5-3, after four complete innings.

Despite a shaky start allowing five runs in the first four innings, NU's starter, Quinn Lavelle, settled in in the later frames, sending down the final 10 batters he faced. He allowed nine runs over 7.0 innings, but eight of those hits were singles.

Chicago's Big Ten Team would go down scoreless for two-straight innings but, in the seventh inning, came back with a vengeance.

NU loaded the bases and Alex Erro brought one run home on a sacrifice fly before Goosenberg brought one more home on an RBI double that nearly left the park.

Northwestern added two more runs in the eighth inning with an OSU error and a passed ball.

Left-handed reliever Sam Lawrence tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the Wildcats.

Chicago's Big Ten Team's offense exploded in the ninth inning, scoring six runs on five hits, including a grand slam by Casey O'Laughlin, his third big fly of the season. O'Laughlin tied his career high with four RBI.

Closer Nick Paciorek finished the game with a no-hit ninth inning.

The Wildcats will continue their series against Ohio State tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 p.m. CT.
