EUGENE, Ore. -- No. 23 Northwestern was unable to hold off a late charge by host Oregon, falling 4-3 Saturday evening.
The Wildcats (3-3) remained undefeated in doubles play as they surged out to an early lead. A battle of top-10 doubles teams at No. 1 was no contest as top-ranked Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp rolled to a 6-1 victory over 10th-ranked Alyssa Tobita and Shweta Sangwan. A 6-4 win by Rheeya Doshi and Julie Byrne at No. 3 clinched doubles for NU, giving the guests a 1-0 lead.
Oregon (5-2) remained in contention by winning the first set in four of the singles matches, including all three that went to a tiebreak. A win by the Ducks at No. 5 evened the match, but straight-sets wins by 70th-ranked Maddie Lipp at No. 3 and Alex Chatt at No. 4 put Northwestern back in front, 3-1.
However, the hosts evened the match thanks to victories at Nos. 1 and 6 before getting a third-set comeback at No. 2 to pull off the win.
Northwestern returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Washington at 11 a.m. and Milwaukee at 4 p.m. at Combe Tennis Center.
