Northwestern Takes Down No. 22 Washington, Milwaukee

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern's women's tennis team battled hard to defeat No. 22 Washington, winning, 4-3, before defeating Milwaukee, 7-0, Saturday at Combe Tennis Center.
 
In the day's opening match against Washington, the 12th-ranked duo of junior Lee Or and senior Alex Chatt had a dominating doubles performance, taking the match at No. 2, 6-3. However, the Huskies got an upset win at No. 1, leaving the doubles point to be decided by the match at No. 3. Sophomore Julie Byrne and junior Rheeya Doshi rallied back from a 4-1 deficit to force a tiebreak, but eventually fell as the guests took a 1-0 lead.
 
Senior Maddie Lipp put Northwestern on the board, winning her contest at No. 3 in back-to-back sets, 6-2, 6-4. Sophomore Julie Byrne followed suit, taking her sets 6-2, 6-3 in spot No. 6.
 
Senior Erin Larner at No. 2 had a no-contest first set against No. 36 Vanessa Wong, easily winning, 6-1. Larner fought hard for the second set and went on to win it in a tiebreak, 7-6 (2), for the upset win that tied the match at 3-3.
 
The match came down to a decisive match at No. 4 between first-year Inci Ogut and enadi Hance. With Ogut taking the first set 7-5, the two battled for set two as well, Hance ultimately taking it in a tiebreaker. However, Ogut managed to take the third set, 6-4, giving the Wildcats the hard-fought victory.
 
The 'Cats then hosted Milwaukee in the nightcap, rolling to a 7-0 win.
 
Northwestern only dropped one doubles game. The Wildcats got a forfeit win at No. 3 and 12th-ranked Or and Chatt won, 6-1, while Byrne and Doshi didn't surrender a game.
 
The Wildcats won every set of their singles matches, highlighted by Byrne's 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 3. No Northwestern player surrendered more than three games in any of the singles matches.
 
The #B1GCats are back in action when they host Vanderbilt at Combe Tennis Center Friday, February 23 at 2:30 p.m.
