POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – For the third consecutive year, Northwestern posted a perfect record at the Vassar Invitational, defeating all eight opponents.
First-year Emma Scala paced the team with a 14-2 record in her first official collegiate meet. Six Wildcats posted double-digit wins, including 13 by Natalie Kim and 12 by Sofia Simontov.
The 'Cats' most dominant performances came from the foil group, who combined for a 57-3 record in eight rounds, including winning their first 36 matches. Jerrica Liao, Alyssa Chen, Simontov, and Dhruthi Reddy all finished the day undefeated.
"The team fenced really well today. Most of our first-years carried a heavy load for us today and performed great for their first dual meet," said head coach Zach Moss. "I'm excited to see the team clicking so well at such high level. We will look to carry this momentum into next weekend's meet at Ohio Sate."
Northwestern opened up the day with a 26-1 rout over City College of New York, featuring clean sweeps from the foil and saber groups. The #B1GCats followed up with consecutive 23-4 wins over Fairleigh Dickinson and Sacred Heart, where Marta Amador Molina picked up her first wins of the campaign.
The 'Cats went on to defeat Haverford, 21-6, which featured sophomore Zhesi Zhuang's third sweep of the afternoon. Against Wellesley, NU relied on clean sweeps from Scala, Simontov, Kim, Abigail Swallow, and Sharon Chen in the 22-5 victory.
Northwestern wrapped up the day by defeating Stevens Tech, Lafayette, and Wagner.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will travel to Columbus, Ohio for the Elite Invitational on November 17th and 18th.
