PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Northwestern and Rutgers exchanged three goals in the final 20 minutes of Friday night's showdown, but a penalty shot by Rutgers in the final minutes was the difference in a 2-1 setback for the Wildcats.
The #B1GCats put the pressure on the Scarlet Knights early in the game, with four shots (three on goal) in the first 10 minutes of action.
Miha Miskovic made two diving saves in the 17th and 23rd minutes to keep the game scoreless. He finished the night with three saves.
Northwestern finished the half with eight shots (four on goal) compared to six (two on goal) for Rutgers. The 'Cats ultimately out shot Rutgers 16-14 on the night.
The Scarlet Knights pulled ahead with a goal in the 72nd minute. However, the Wildcats battled back with an equalizer eights minutes later as Matt Moderwell buried his second goal of the season from six yards out to tie the game, 1-1. Tommy Katsiyiannis was credited with the assist off an entry pass from the end line.
The #B1GCats continued to put the pressure on Rutgers following Moderwell's goal, putting up four shots and three corner kicks in a span of seven minutes. But following a hand ball penalty, Rutgers capitalized on a penalty kick in the 88th minute to take the lead.
Chicago's Big Ten Team will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to UIC to take on the Flames at 7:00 PM.
