Northwestern Travels to UIC Tuesday

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern travels across town on Tuesday, April 4, for a 6 p.m. CT game against UIC. The Wildcats' game against Illinois State that was scheduled for Wednesday, April 5, has been cancelled.
Northwestern (8-18) enters the week fresh off a series win over Air Force and having won three of its last four games. The Wildcats started last week with a 2-0, shutout-win against Chicago State (March 29), before taking the final two games against the Falcons in a weekend series.
Head coach Spencer Allen has tabbed Josh Davis (1-0, 3.44 ERA) to start Tuesday's game against UIC and Cooper Wetherbee (1-1, 1.53 ERA) to get the ball in Wednesday's contest against Illinois State.
Northwestern will resume Big Ten Conference play this weekend when Iowa visits Miller Park for a three-game series.
OPPONENT
UIC (17-7) is coming off a series sweep of Milwaukee over the weekend. The Flames have been red hot at home this season, winning 10-of-11 games played at Curtis Granderson Stadium. David Cronin paces the club at the plate with a .375 average and a team-high 36 hits. Ricardo Ramirez has been the power hitter for UIC with six home runs, five doubles and 18 RBI.
Jacob Key (3-0, 1.69 ERA) will make his fifth start of the season, third against NU, on Tuesday. Key has 18 strikeouts in his rookie campaign and has only allowed six runs in 26.2 innings pitched.
DRAMATIC FASHION
Both of Northwestern's wins over Air Force happened in dramatic fashion. In game two against the Falcons, the Wildcats fell behind 6-0 before scoring seven-unanswered runs to win 7-6. The rubber match on Sunday went to extra innings and junior Connor Lind won the game with a walk-off home run in the bottom of the 11th.
PITCHING PROFILED
Northwestern pitchers had a good week (March 27 – April 2) on the bump, helping the Wildcats to a trio of victories. Air Force entered the weekend series against Northwestern ranked fourth nationally in batting average with a .331 mark. The Wildcats' pitching staff limited the Falcons to a .287 batting average in the series.
Senior Cooper Wetherbee started against Chicago State (March 29) and went a career-high seven-scoreless innings to lead Northwestern to its first shutout win since May 2015. Wetherbee was efficient in his seven innings of work, only allowing four hits and two walks, while striking out one in the 26 batters he faced.
Freshmen Matt Gannon and Josh Levy combined for a solid outing in Sunday's series finale win over Air Force, while classmate Sam Lawrence had a pair of scoreless-relief appearances against Chicago State (March 29) and Air Force (April 1). Gannon made the fifth start of his career on Sunday and went 5.0 innings, collecting thee strikeouts and only allowing one run. Josh Levy relieved Gannon in the sixth and pitch 6.0 frames allowing one run on four hits and striking out three to earn the win for the Wildcats.
Sam Lawrence made two relief appearances last week and pitched 4.0 innings of scoreless baseball, only allowing four hits in the two appearances.
LAST TIME…
Northwestern dropped a heartbreaker the last time they played at Curtis Granderson Stadium. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of ninth, UIC's Brandon Gibis took a pitch back up the middle off Pete Hofman to give UIC a 5-4 walk-off win over Northwestern on May 4, 2016. Matt Hopfner, Joe Hoscheit, Willie Bourbon and Ben Dickey each tallied a single in the contest.
