'Cats Fall in Monday Night Contest at Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. – Northwestern fell to Portland, 8-3, on Monday night at Joe Etzel Field.
LHP Ryan Weaver was solid in 4.0 shutout innings pitched, striking out four while allowing just two hits and one walk.
INF Noah Ruiz gave the Wildcats (8-12-1, 2-4 Big Ten) the early lead with an RBI single, marking his fourth consecutive game with an RBI to put NU ahead 1-0.
Portland (15-7, 3-0 WCC) grabbed the lead in the bottom of the sixth with two runs and extended its lead with five unearned runs in the seventh.
OF Jackson Freeman slugged a solo homer in the top of the eighth to cut the lead to 7-2
With one in the eighth inning, Etzel Field and the Portland Campus lost power, delaying the game for over an hour. After the delay, Portland added a run in the eighth to extend its lead to 8-2.
In the top of the ninth, INF Jack Counsell drove in Ruiz with an RBI double down the left-field line, capping off the scoring for the night.
RHP James Whitaker (0-1) is credited with the loss, allowing two runs on one hit and one walk in 1.1 innings pitched.
Northwestern continues its west coast road trip with a three-game series at Washington this weekend. Friday and Saturday's games are scheduled for 9 p.m. CT, with Sunday's series finale slated for 3 p.m. CT.
