Lind's Walk-Off Leads Northwestern to Victory, Series Win

4/2/2017 3:55:00 PM | Baseball

EVANSTON, Ill. — With Northwestern and Air Force deadlocked at 2-2 in the bottom of the 11th inning, junior Connor Lind blasted a walk-off home run over the left field fence to give the Wildcats a 3-2 victory and the series win.

Northwestern only had to use two pitchers in the 11-inning marathon. Matt Gannon made the fifth start of his career and went 5.0 innings, only allow one run, while striking out three. Fellow freshman Josh Levy earned the victory for the Wildcats after tossing a career-high 6.0 innings, holding the Falcons to one run on four hits with three strikeouts.

Jack Dunn was the only Northwestern player to tally multiple hits in the contest. He finished with two hits and an RBI, while Alex Erro notched a double as the #B1GCats only other extra-base hit.

Air Force struck first on Sunday, scoring a run in the top of the third inning when Adam Groesbeck hit a two-out triple to right center and then Bradley Haslam doubled down the right field line in the following at-bat to put the Falcons in front, 1-0.

Northwestern evened the contest in the bottom of the sixth. Jake Schieber singled to lead off the inning and Chalrie Maxwell moved him over to second with a sacrifice bunt. Leo Kaplan came off the bench to pinch hit and singled up the middle to put runners on the corners for Jack Dunn, who scored Schieber with a suicide squeeze.

Air Force retook the lead in the top of the seventh when a pitch got away from Josh Levy with runners on first and third and a run came across to put the Falcons up 2-1.

The Wildcats answered in the top of the eighth. Following a single by Jack Claeys and a Dunn walk, Matt Hopfner attempted a sacrifice bunt, but the Falcons were able to get the lead runner at third. With two outs, Joe Hoscheit put the ball in play to short and an Air Force throwing error allowed Dunn to come around and score to knot it at 2-2.

Zeroes populated the board until Lind's at-bat in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Northwestern will play five games in the coming week. The Wildcats travel to UIC on Tuesday, April 4, before hosting Illinois State on Wednesday, April 3 and then Iowa for the a three-game series next weekend.
