EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 47 Northwestern won five of six singles matches in improving to 2-0 in Big Ten play with a 5-2 victory over No. 33 Maryland on Saturday at Combe Tennis Center.

The Wildcats (6-8, 2-0 B1G) got doubles play off on the right foot as the 10th-ranked team of Maddie Lipp and Alex Chatt dominated Alexandra Stanova and Kristina Hovsepyan, winning 6-1 in a neat and tidy 21 minutes. However, Maryland (11-2, 2-1 B1G) would get a 6-3 win at No. 2 and a 6-4 victory at No. 3 to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Northwestern bounced back in singles play by winning the first set in four of the six matches, positioning itself well to come back and take the match.

The Wildcats were dominant in each of the three matches at the back end of the lineup. Rheeya Doshi was the first to finish off her match, notching a convincing 6-2, 6-2 win over Katsiaryna Yemelyanenka at No. 4. Chatt followed suit around a minute later as she closed out a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 5 over Cassandre Thibault, giving NU a 2-1 lead in the match.

Jillian Rooney brought Northwestern within one point of the match victory, completing a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Caroline Williams at No. 6. Lee Or had the honor of clinching the match for NU when she closed out Arnelle Sullivan for a 6-4, 6-3 win.

In the remaining two matches on the courts, Erin Larner and Maddie Lipp both rallied back from dropping the first set to force a decisive third set at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively. Larner bounced back from dropping a close opening set to roll past Alexandra Stanova, 5-7, 6-1, 6-1. A third-set superbreaker was played in the match between Lipp and Ekaterina Tour with the Terrapin earning a 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (6) victory.

Northwestern is back in action at 11 a.m. Sunday when it hosts Rutgers at Combe Tennis Center.
