'Cats Stay Undefeated in Big Ten with 5-2 Win Over Rutgers

EVANSTON, Ill. -- No. 47 Northwestern remained undefeated in Big Ten play by posting a 5-2 victory over Rutgers on Sunday at Combe Tennis Center.
NU improves to 7-8 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten while Rutgers falls to 5-8 and 0-4.
In doubles action, the Wildcats' No. 1 team of Erin Larner and Rheeya Doshi barely broke a sweat against Chloe Lee and Ksenija Tihomirova, rolling to a 6-0 victory. The other two matches weren't the same story as Rutgers was up a break late at both Nos. 2 and 3. After the Scarlet Knights secured the win at No. 3, the 'Cats rallied back to take a 5-4 lead at No. 2 before eventually falling, 7-5, giving the guests the doubles point.
The early match deficit didn't faze the Wildcats going into singles play as NU captured the first set in five of the six matches. Lee Or was the first Wildcat to finish off her match at No. 3, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. Moments later, Doshi completed her 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2, giving Northwestern a 2-1 lead in the match.
A 6-2, 6-1 triumph by Larner at No. 1 brought the Wildcats within one point of winning the match before Alex Chatt had the honor of clinching by earning a 6-2, 7-6 (2) win at No. 4.
Rutgers picked up another point by getting a victory by Farris Cunningham at No. 6 before Jillian Rooney closed out the match by earning a 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 win at No. 5.
Northwestern returns to action at 3 p.m. Friday when it takes on Nebraska in Lincoln.
