Game Notes: Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. — Northwestern will begin open up Big Ten Conference play this weekend by welcoming Indiana to Miller Park for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 24.

Northwestern enters the weekend looking to end a three-game losing skid. The Wildcats took one game last weekend in a four-game series with Central Michigan and then fell to cross-town foe UIC, 7-1, on Tuesday. Senior Jake Schieber stepped up offensively for the Wildcats last weekend, tallying a team-high six hits and batting .429 in the four games. In the mid-week matchup vs. UIC, Cooper Wetherbee was effective in his first start of the season, going 4.0 innings and striking out a career-high five batters.

Head coach Spencer Allen has tabbed Tommy Bordignon, (0-1, 11.88 ERA), Hank Christie (1-3, 4.10 ERA) and Josh Davis (1-0, 2.93 ERA) as the starters for the weekend. Christie leads the team in innings pitched (26.1), starts (5) and is tied for the lead in strikeouts (18).

Last season, Northwestern came up on the wrong side of three, one-run games against Indiana in Bloomington.

Indiana enters the weekend 10-8-1 overall and has won six of its last seven games, including a 3-2 win over Cincinnati (March 22) earlier this week. The Hoosiers are led on the offensive end by Alex Krupa, who is batting .327 on the season with 16 hits and a .551 slugging percentage. Krupa is the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week after hitting .533 (8-for-15) with two doubles, a triple, three RBI, five runs scored and a stolen base in four games at Hawaii.

On the mound, Indiana has looked to Brian Hobbie (1-1, 4.33 ERA), Andrew Saalfrank (1-1, 5.24 ERA) and Time Herrin (2-2, 5.25 ERA) for a majority of its starts. The Hoosiers' pitching staff boasts a 3.74 ERA this season.
