EVANSTON, Ill. — Senior Melissa Postoll, sophomore Olivia Rosendahl and freshman Valerie Gruest Slowing are headed to Indianapolis, Indiana, to represent Northwestern at the 2017 NCAA Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.
All three Wildcats qualified for three events. Postoll is scheduled to compete in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 200 back, while Gruest Slowing qualified to race in the 500 free, 200 fly and 1,650 free. Rosendahl, a 2016 All-American on the Platform, will compete in all three diving competitions after a strong showing at the NCAA Zone C qualifier last week.
Postoll enters the 2017 NCAA Championships coming off record-breaking performances at the Big Ten Championships last month. The senior broke school records in the 200 back (1:55.09), 200 IM (4:08.76) and 400 IM (1:58.54). This will be Postoll's first appearance at the national finals. She is seeded 28th in the 400 IM, 47th in the 200 back and 48th in the 200 IM.
Rosendahl became the first Northwestern diver to earn All-American honors last season with a fourth-place finish on the platform. She built off her freshman campaign this season by working her way towards a pair of second-place finishes at the Big Ten Championships while breaking the school record on the platform with a 368.05. The sophomore finished in the top 10 in all three events at the NCAA Zone C qualifier last week in Bloomington, Indiana, including a second-place score in platform.
Gruest Slowing entered her freshman campaign with high expectations coming off appearing at the 2016 Rio Olympics last summer and did not disappoint. The first-year Wildcat already owns school records in the 500 free (4:40.53), 1,000 free (9:40.37) and 1,650 free (16:01.28). She finished fifth in the 1,650 free at the Big Ten Championships, breaking her own school record with her 1,000 free split. The Guatemala native is seeded 16th in the 1,650 free, 27th in the 500 free and 49th in the 200 fly.
The top eight qualifiers from the trials in the morning advance to the championship final and earn All-American honors, while qualifiers 9-16 advance to the consolation finals and earn honorable mention All-American honors.
