NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Senior Matt Hopfner launched a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning to cut into Lipscomb's lead, but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats fell to the Bison, 10-6, in the final game of the 2017 Mule Mix Classic.
Hopfner tallied another hit in the final inning to finish the day 2-for-5 with four RBIs. Freshman Alex Erro was the only other Wildcat to collect multiple hits on the day. He went 2-for-4 with a walk on Sunday afternoon.
Four Northwestern pitchers saw action on Sunday, including Tommy Bordignon, who made his first start of the 2017 season and only lasted 1.2 innings. The #B1GCats right-hander collected two strike outs and allowed five earned runs as he was credited with the loss.
Freshman Josh Levy went a team-best 3.1 innings and only surrendered four hits in 14 batters faced. J.R. Reimer and Sam Lawrence each went an inning-plus out of the bullpen.
Lipscomb outhit Northwestern, 11-8, on Sunday with every batter in its lineup recording at least one hit. Adam Stewart earned the win for Lipscomb after going 5.2 innings and holding Northwester to just two runs.
The Wildcats struck first on Sunday, scoring two runs in the top of the second. Charlie Maxwell singled to right field to lead off the inning and Connor Lind doubled in the following at-bat to put runners on second and third with no outs. Jack Claeys and Jack Dunn each put the ball in play in consecutive at-bats to bring home two runs.
For the third consecutive game one bad inning plagued the Wildcats. Lipscomb countered Northwestern's two-run second inning with six runs in the bottom of the frame. The Bison added one run in the third and two more in the bottom of the sixth before Hopfner's grand slam in the top of the seventh cut into the lead.
Lipscomb received an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to hold on for a 10-6 victory.
Northwestern will head to California next weekend for a four-game series at Santa Clara.
