Game Notes: Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern baseball will hit the road this weekend for the third time in a row to start the season with a four game series at Santa Clara.

Joe Schindler (0-2, 6.00 ERA) will make his third start of the season on Friday night. Freshman Hank Christie (0-1, 3.86 ERA) is set to take the mound for the first game of the Saturday doubleheader while Matt Gannon (0-0, 1.50 ERA) will start the second. Junior Tommy Bordignon will get the nod on Sunday.

The Wildcats are coming off of the Mule Mix Classic last weekend when they faced Middle Tennessee, Belmont and Lipscomb. Freshman Alex Erro went 3-4 with two RBIs and his first career home run in an 11-4 defeat to Middle Tennessee, despite Northwestern taking an early 3-0 lead.

Senior Matt Hopfner went 3-4 at the plate as the 'Cats dropped a 6-1 contest to Belmont. Gannon threw an impressive four innings of relief, allowing no runs and striking out three.

Hopfner continued his hot hitting against Lipscomb and launched a grand slam in the seventh inning in the 10-6 loss.

Erro was named Big Ten Freshman of the week for his performance at the Mule Mix Classic. He led the Wildcats with a .700 batting average, .769 on base percentage and 1.100 slugging percentage over the weekend. He collected three multi-hit games and had a team-high seven hits.

Santa Clara heads into this weekend with a 1-6 record, including a 10-3 loss to Big Ten foe Michigan last Sunday. The Broncos are coming off a midweek 11-7 loss to Cal Poly.

Senior Jacob Steffens (0-1, 0.63 ERA) will start first for the hosts on Friday and has struck out 16 batters in 14 innings pitched. Redshirt Sophomore Eric Lex (1-1, 3.00 ERA) will throw the first game on Saturday, and also has 16 strikeouts, but in just nine innings. Freshman Grant Nechak (0-2, 7.56 ERA) is slated to start the second half of Saturday's doubleheader while Junior Michael Bono (0-0, 4.50 ERA) is scheduled to face the 'Cats on Sunday.

WNUR RELEASE
Prior to the start of the 2017 season, head coach Spencer Allen announced that every game of the 2017 season is scheduled to be broadcast on either TV, radio or online. The announcement came in large part to an agreement between the university's athletic department and WNUR Sports to carry all of the Wildcats' road games. Matt McHugh will travel with the Wildcats to Santa Clara to broadcast all four games against the Broncos.
