Bats Go Cold for Wildcats at Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Senior Matt Hopfner went 3-for-4 with a double, but Northwestern dropped a 6-1 decision to Belmont in game two of the Mule Mix Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Belmont scored a pair of runs in the first inning and never looked back. Freshman Hank Christie made the second start of his career and went 3.1 allowing three runs on four hits and striking out three. He was credited with the loss.
The Bruins used a four-run fourth inning to build a six run lead. Northwestern got a run back in the top of the eighth when Mat Jones drove in Hopfner.
Freshman Alex Erro, who tallied three hits yesterday at Middle Tennessee, went 2-for-2 at the dish with a pair of walks.
Matt Gannon was impressive in relief, going four innings and not allowing a run, while fanning three.
Northwestern will wrap up the Mule Mix Classic tomorrow when it takes on Lipscomb at 1 p.m. CT. Junior RHP Tommy Bordignon will make his first start of the season.
