Lindsey connects on a career-high seven three-point field goals
CHICAGO – Scottie Lindsey connected on a career-high seven three pointers and scored a team-high 25 points to lead Chicago's Big Ten Team to a 62-60 victory over DePaul at Wintrust Arena on Saturday.
Vic Law also contributed by scoring nine points on 3-of-5 shooting despite missing almost the entire second half with an upper body injury. Dererk Pardon added eight points and six rebounds, while Isiah Brown and Jordan Ash both provided a spark off the bench, finishing with seven and five points, respectively.
Northwestern shot 40.0-percent from the field on 24-of-60 shooting, including 39.3-percent (11-of-28) from three-point territory. DePaul shot 41.5-percent from the field on 22-of-53 shooting, including 7-of-20 from behind the arc.
DePaul suffered its fifth loss of the season to fall to 6-5 on the year. Max Strus led the Blue Demons with a game-high 33 points, earning him the Waldo Fisher/Frank McGrath MVP award for the game.
Both teams got off to quick starts offensively, with each side knocking down five of its first eight shots from the field. Lindsey paced the Northwestern offense early on, scoring eight of the first 16 points for the 'Cats.
An 8-0 run by DePaul helped the Blue Demons pull ahead, opening their lead up to as many as nine points midway through the first half. However, despite some hot shooting by DePaul, the Wildcats battled back to cut into the lead late in the half. Back-to-back triples from Law narrowed the NU deficit to just three, but DePaul entered halftime with a 33-28 lead.
Lindsey led the Wildcats at the half with 11 points and four rebounds, while Law chipped in with nine points. As a team, the 'Cats struggled shooting from the field, converting on 11-of-30 field goals, while the Blue Demons shot 13-of-26 from the field.
DePaul took a 43-37 lead with 14 minutes remaining in the game, but the #B1GCats battled back with an 8-0 run to regain the lead.
Strong play by the Northwestern bench helped in jumpstarting the run. Ash hit a triple for his first points of the game to start the run, and Isiah Brown converted on a three in transition to put the Wildcats on top, 44-43.
Northwestern also ramped up its defensive efforts as points came at a premium for DePaul midway through the half. The Wildcats held the Blue Demons scoreless for 5:40, which allowed NU to take a 51-47 lead with 7:41 remaining.
DePaul cut back into Northwestern's lead, cutting the game to one possession on multiple occasions. However, Lindsey shut the door with two clutch baskets in the game's final minutes, including a deep three pointer--his seventh of the game--to give the Wildcats a 62-57 lead with 55 seconds remaining.
Holding a 62-60 lead with five seconds left in the game, the #B1GCats' defense came up with a stop to seal the game and hold on for their third consecutive victory over DePaul.
Chicago's Big Ten team will return home to Allstate Arena on Monday, Dec. 19 when they host Lewis for a 7 p.m. tip. Tickets are available online at NUsports.com or by calling 888-GO-PURPLE.
