EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern picked up a statement win on Friday night when it toppled No. 7 TCU, 4-2, in front of a great crowd at the Combe Tennis Center.
The 13th-ranked Wildcats (2-0) did so in pretty dominant fashion in front of nearly 400 fans in the team's home opener. Northwestern won the doubles point and all three of its singles wins came in straight sets.
"Unbelievable team win," head coach Arvid Swan said. "The guys really stepped up. TCU is one of the best teams in the country. It was a great test for us, and I was really pleased to see our guys raise their level. Great win for us, for sure."
Chicago's Big Ten Team avenged a 4-3 loss to the then-No. 3 Horned Frogs last season in Fort Worth, Texas.
Jason Seidman got the 'Cats rolling in singles at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-0 dismantling of Gianni Mancini. The win was Seidman's first career dual victory.
After Ben Vandixhorn fell at No. 5 to Reese Stalder, Sam Shropshire pushed the lead to 3-1 when he beat 101st-ranked Jerry Lopez in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 3 spot.
TCU got the score to 3-2 with a win at No. 1, when Cameron Norrie, a top-300 player in the entire world, edged Strong Kirchheimer, 6-4, 6-2.
Konrad Zieba made sure Northwestern was victorious with a hard-fought, straight set win at No. 2 over Alex Rybakov. Zieba won the first set with a 7-3 tiebreak, and then outlasted Rybakov in the second, 6-4.
"We knew we had a good shot," Zieba said. "We had to come out hot and get that doubles point and then we took the momentum and rode with it."
Northwestern freshman Dominik Starý was in a three-set battle with 55th-ranked Guillermo Nunez, but their match went unfinished after the Wildcat victory.
Northwestern won the doubles point for the second straight time to open the year with wins at Nos. 1 and 2. Kirchheimer and Stary bounced back from their season-opening loss and took it to Reese Stalder and Jerry Lopez at No. 2. The Northwestern duo won 6-4 to get the night started. With TCU threatening to take the decision at No. 3, Sam Shropshire and Konrad Zieba stepped up at No. 1 and finished ahead of that Horned Frogs pairing. Their 7-5 win over Guillermo Nunez and Alex Rybakov at the top spot gave the Wildcats the first team point of the match.
The Wildcats are right back at home on Sunday when they welcome Louisville and IUPUI to the Combe Tennis Center for a doubleheader. The Louisville match starts at 11 a.m. with the IUPUI match set to begin at 4 p.m. There will be an on-court hit around for fans between the two matches.
