Northwestern Returns to Action Sunday, Hosts New Orleans

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern returns from a week-long break for final exams on Sunday when it hosts New Orleans at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Tip time is set for 6 p.m.
Northwestern (6-2) is playing the fourth game of a season-long five-game homestand and is the midst of playing eight straight games in the Chicagoland area.
The Wildcats are coming off an 80-64 victory over DePaul on Saturday, Dec. 3. Northwestern led by as many as 39 in the contest, including 54-18 at halftime. Scottie Lindsey posted 19 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds while Sanjay Lumpkin contributed a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Lindsey is the only Big Ten player who is currently averaging at least 15.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per contest.
NU's only two losses this season have come by a combined six points to a pair of teams that are currently ranked. The 'Cats fell on a buzzer-beater, 70-68, at No. 16/15 Butler and lost 70-66 to No. 23/22 Notre Dame on a neutral court in Brooklyn in the championship game of the Legends Classic.
After ranking sixth nationally with a 1.59 assist-to-turnover ratio during the 2015-16 campaign, Northwestern has picked up where it left off. The Wildcats sport a 1.60 ratio (147 assists, 92 turnovers) so far this season ranking them first in the Big Ten and 10th in the nation. Northwestern also ranks second in the Big Ten and 12th nationally with an average of 6.5 blocked shots per game.
Northwestern has won both previous meetings with New Orleans. The Wildcats won last year's matchup with the Privateers, 90-63, on Nov. 28 in Evanston behind a career-high 26 points from Scottie Lindsey. Northwestern has a 10-1 all-time record against current members of the Southland Conference.
Scouting New Orleans
The Privateers (4-3) have won three straight games and are coming off a convincing 70-54 victory at Washington State Dec. 3. Christavious Gill led four New Orleans players in double figures with 18 points. Senior forward Erik Thomas is one of three players in the nation averaging at least 21.0 points and 7.0 boards per contest while shooting at least 60.0 percent from the field. Head coach Mark Slessinger is a graduate of Aurora University.
