Flens nets hat trick for Wildcats

PHILADELPHIA -- Isabel Flens recorded a hat trick in the first nine minutes of the match and No. 6 Northwestern had little trouble with Drexel, notching a 7-2 victory Sunday aftenroon at Buckley Field.

The victory was the eighth consecutive for the Wildcats who improve to 10-2 on the season.

"Isabel had a great today and really helped us start on our front foot," Northwestern head coach Tracey Fuchs said. "I was very happy with the way we played today. We started strong and capitalized on our opportunities."

Saar de Breij added two goals for NU which scored the first seven goals of the contest.

Flens came ready to play, talling goals at 2:50, 4:27 and 8:57 as the Wildcats surged out to the big early lead. The 3-0 lead held up until de Breij notched her first of the game with 1:27 remaining in the opening half as Northwestern took a 4-0 advantage into the intermission.

NU got a second-half goal from Pascale Massey at 41:49 before de Breij posted her second of the match at 50:35. Katie Yeatts added Northwestern's final goal at 57:49 to make it 7-0.

Drexel was able to avoid the shutout by getting a penalty stroke goal from Jessica McCarthy with 1:49 remaining before Idrienne Walker scored with just 24 seconds remaining.

The 'Cats finished the match with a 19-7 edge in shots and 6-0 in penalty corners.

Northwestern returns to action at 2 p.m. Central time Friday when it travels to Indiana.
