Larner, Lipp, Rischbieth earn singles wins for NU
STILLWATER, Okla. - No. 26 Northwestern started its 2016 dual meet season in successful fashion Saturday, taking down No. 27 Arizona State 4-2 in an opening-round matchup of ITA Kickoff Weekend.
With the victory, the Wildcats advance to take on No. 11 Oklahoma State, a 4-0 winner over No. 32 Notre Dame, on Sunday with a spot in the ITA Indoor Team Championship on the line.
NU surged in front by taking a closely contested doubles point. The 'Cats earned a victory in the first match to finish at No. 2. The duo of senior Alicia Barnett and sophomore Erin Larner pulled off the upset as they took down the 42nd-ranked team of Kassidy Jump and Sami Hampton, 6-4.
The two remaining matches on the courts were both close matchups, but the doubles point was ultimately decided by the match at No. 3 where Manon Peri and Lee Or outlasted Desirae Krawczyk and Gussie O'Sullivan in a tiebreaker, 7-6, giving Northwestern the early lead.
Arizona State kept itself in contention as the teams split the first sets in singles play with each squad winning the opening set in three of the six matches. Larner extended the Wildcats' lead in the match to 2-0 when she finished off a straight-sets win over Jump at No. 2, winning 6-3, 6-3.
The Sun Devils got on the board when Sami Hampton picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win at the No. 4 spot. Northwestern pulled within one victory of the match win when Maddie Lipp won a battle of ranked players as the 61st-ranked redshirt sophomore defeated Krawczyk, who was ranked No. 75, 6-1, 6-4.
Arizona State stayed alive by getting a 6-3, 6-3 victory from Ebony Panoho at No. 3. With the remaining two matches going neck-and-neck, the matchup ultimately was decided by a pair of Australians at the No. 6 spot. That's where NU's Brooke Rischbieth finished off Alexandra Osborne 6-4, 7-6 (5), allowing the Wildcats to move on.
The win was a bit of payback for Northwestern which fell to Arizona State in last year's opening round of ITA Kickoff Weekend in Evanston.
