#B1GCats Split Doubleheader at Boise State Tournament

9/5/2015 10:35:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

BOISE, Idaho – Northwestern played a pair of matches on Saturday to close out the Boise State Tournament and split the doubleheader, beating Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the early match before falling to host Boise State in the nightcap.

Chicago's Big Ten Team was dominant in the early match vs. the Islanders, taking three of four sets, including a 25-18 win in the final game to secure the overall match.

Symone Abbott led the Wildcats' attack with 24 kills on 51 attempts, good for a .373 hitting clip. Sofia Lavin chipped in 14 kills of her own. Taylor Tashima handed out 54 assists, while Katie Kniep set a career high with 17 digs.

Caroline Niedospial moved into sixth place on the all-time digs list at Northwestern with her 31-dig performance against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Niedospial needed only seven digs to tie Stephanie Holthus (2010-13) on the list and totaled 46 in both matches. Her career total now stands at 1,386, 23 shy of Jennifer Jostes (1988-91) for fifth all-time in program history.

Niedospial was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts over the weekend, marking her second all-tournament selection of the season after also receiving the recognition at the Rambler Challenge.

The Wildcats played tremendous defense, holding the Islanders to a .106 clip and forcing them into 25 errors. In Northwestern's match-clinching fourth set, A&M-Corpus Christi hit -.118.

Northwestern was unable to carry its success over to the nightcap, where Boise State, playing on its home floor, swept the Wildcats. Northwestern struggled to get anything going in the first set but hit much better in both the second and third games, pushing Boise State to the brink each time.

The nonconference tournament schedule continues next weekend when Northwestern travels to Bowling Green, Ky. for the Holiday Inn University Plaza Invitational hosted by Western Kentucky. The Wildcats will be joined by the Hilltoppers, Furman and Missouri State for round-robin competition beginning Sept. 11 at 12 p.m.
