Northwestern Splits Friday Doubleheader at Western Kentucky
9/11/2015 9:53:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Northwestern split a pair of matches at the Holiday Inn University Plaza Invitational at Western Kentucky Friday evening, sweeping Furman 3-0 before falling to the host Hilltoppers by the same score.
The Wildcats continued their trend of playing three-set matches with each of Friday's going the minimum distance. Seven of Northwestern's eight matches in 2015 have gone only three sets with the 'Cats holding a 4-3 mark in such matches.
Three Wildcats turned in dominant hitting performances to lead Chicago's Big Ten Team over Furman in the first match. Maddie Slater led all players with a .562 clip, tallying nine kills on 16 attempts. Sofia Lavin led all competitors with 14 kills, hitting at a .407 mark, and Gabrielle Hazen continued her strong play by adding seven kills.
Northwestern held the Paladins to just 14 points in the first game, allowing Furman to hit only .088. The Wildcats came into the tournament fourth in the Big Ten in opponent hitting percentage and held Furman to a .178 mark overall.
The Wildcats were unable to sustain their success against a Western Kentucky team leading the receiving votes category in the AVCA national top-25 poll. Northwestern took the Hilltoppers to the wire in every set, dropping each by respective scores of 25-22, 27-25 and 25-21.
Taylor Tashima posted double-doubles in each match on Friday, marking the second and third times a Northwestern student-athlete has done so this season. Tashima recorded 41 assists and 11 digs against Furman and added 30 assists and 11 digs in the nightcap vs. Western Kentucky.
Caroline Niedospial jumped two spots to fourth place all-time at Northwestern in digs. The senior began the night with 1,386 and added 37 combined in the two matches to pass Jennifer Jostes (1988-91) and Julie Chin (2009-12). Niedospial next sets her sights on Janine Makar (1985-88), who she trails by seven for third in program history.
Northwestern is back in action tomorrow when the Wildcats wrap up the road trip with a neutral site match against Missouri State at 1:30 p.m.
