HAMMOND, La. -- After an extremely long day of travel, Northwestern dropped its series opening-game against the Southeastern Louisiana Lions by a score of 10-5 at Pat Kenelly Diamond on a chilly Friday night.
The Lions jumped on the Wildcats for a pair of scores in the bottom of the first inning Friday under the lights. The first run came in on a wild pitch following a leadoff single and an error, while the second tally, which was unearned scored on an infield single. Northwestern's Brandon Magallones did leave the bases loaded to limit SLU to just two runs.
The home team sprung for three more runs in the third and four in the bottom of the fourth to take a commanding 9-0 lead before NU mounted its first serious offensive threat. Joe Hoscheit and JR Reimer opened the frame with back-to-back doubles before Connor Lind knocked a two-run single down the line in right to pick up his first collegiate RBIs.
After a walk to Grant Peikert and a wild pitch, Zach Jones laced a base hit to left-center field with two outs that brought home two more runs and made it 9-4 in favor of the Lions.
Reimer, a freshman from nearby Lake Forest, Ill., is batting .400 with two doubles and two RBI in five games this season.
Newcomer Justin Yoss held SLU off the board in the fifth and sixth innings, but the home team added its 10th run of the game in the bottom of the seventh. NU was able to scratch out one more in the top of the 8th when Jones walked and eventually scored on a passed ball. Northwestern would come no closer, however, and the 'Cats dropped the opener, 10-5.
Magallones took his first loss of the season in his third start. The senior surrendered four earned runs on eight hits over three innings. After striking out eight opponents in each of his first two 2015 outings, the Manhattan, Ill., native punched out only three this weekend.
Evan Schreiber, who missed the entire 2014 season with an injury, tossed a scoreless eighth inning for the Wildcats Friday. He faced five batters and struck out one.
With bad weather in the forecast for the Hammond area on Sunday, the teams have decided to play a doubleheader to conclude the three-game series on Saturday. Game one will begin at 2 p.m. CT with game two beginning approximately 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first. A pair of junior left-handers, Reed Mason and Matt Portland, are slated to start for the Wildcats on the mound.
