EVANSTON, Ill. -- Despite outshooting and outcornering Stanford on Wednesday at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex, Northwestern suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of the Cardinal, 1-0.

The Wildcats (4-1) created a majority of the scoring opportunities in the match, but it was an early score for Stanford which made the difference. NU held a 19-12 advantage in shots and a 9-5 edge in penalty corners in the contest.

"Today was a different game because we did not capitalize like we have been in the past," Northwestern head coach Kelly McCollum said. "But even though we had to play catchup, we still believed we could win and that is huge for us."

Stanford (3-3) scored the lone goal of the match at the 14:14 mark on its first penalty corner of the afternoon.

Following the score, NU keeper Sherri-Anne Nyberg (Kelowna, British Columbia/Kelowna Secondary) turned away every shot she faced, recording seven saves in the match to keep the Wildcats within one.

Ana Kralovec made 10 saves in the net for Stanford to earn the shutout.

"I was proud of the effort at the end of the game," McCollum said. "Stanford is a good team and we had them on their heels. We created opportunities but just could not make them count."

The Wildcats came into the match averaging 4.25 goals per game. Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) fired 10 shots, seven of them on goal, to pace NU.

Northwestern returns to action this weekend in College Park, Md. The Wildcats will face American University at Noon Central Saturday before matching up with the Terps at Noon on Sunday.
