ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Playing its third consecutive ranked opponent, Northwestern lost its third consecutive match Saturday afternoon, falling 4-1 to No. 7 Michigan in Ann Arbor.
"We are not putting forth the consistent effort needed to beat top opponents," NU head coach Kelly McCollum said. "We have the ability to be a top team ourselves, but we have not consistently shown that."
The Wolverines (8-3, 2-0 Big Ten) boast the highest-scoring attack in the conference and they showcased it against NU, scoring three first half goals before McCollum put backup goalkeeper Kelly Augustine (Northampton, Pa./Northampton) into the cage.
Augustine allowed a single goal five minutes into the second half to make the score 4-0, but otherwise shut down the Michigan attack. After the Wolverines' quick start Northwestern played the final 44 minutes in a 1-1 tie.
Senior Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) caged the Wildcats' goal in the 43rd minute on an assist from sophomore Wenny Ng (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson).
With the goal, Cooper moves into a tie for 14th-place all-time at Northwestern in scoring with 73 points.
NU (6-6, 0-2 Big Ten) has proved to be streaky this season, putting together two- and four-match winning streaks around a pair of three-game slides.
The Wildcats return to action next weekend with home matches against Indiana Friday and New Hampshire Sunday.
