EVANSTON, Ill. -- Northwestern earned its first Big Ten win of the season Friday afternoon at the Leonard B. Thomas Athletic Complex, beating Indiana, 2-1, in overtime.

In the 10th minute of the first extra frame, sophomore Meghan Small (Macungie, Pa./Moravian Academy) sent a ball into space for junior Holly Palin (Mequon, Wis./University School of Milwaukee) who pushed it past a charging goalkeeper to junior Christine Nannicelli (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) for the wide-open match winner.

With the win, Northwestern (7-6, 1-2 Big Ten) ups its series record with the Hoosiers to a perfect 8-0.

"This was a great Big Ten match," NU head coach Kelly McCollum said. "We played awesome but so did Indiana. Everything came together for us today."

Indiana (7-6, 0-4 Big Ten) drew first blood, scoring on a penalty corner in the 16th minute.

It was the Wildcats, however, who dominated most of the play, especially in the first half when they earned a staggering nine penalty corners. NU finally broke through in the 26th minute when Candice Cooper (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) put a corner home on an assist from Small.

Of its seven wins this season, four have been of the come-from-behind variety.

"We learned no matter how tough things get, all of the work is worth it," McCollum said. Her team is now 3-0 this season in overtime matches.

The Wildcats return to action at 1 p.m. Sunday when they host New Hampshire. The match will feature a celebration of NU's 1994 Big Ten Championship and NCAA Final Four squad.
