EVANSTON, Ill. - Northwestern capped a memorable homecoming weekend after topping Purdue in three games (30-17, 32-30, 30-26). The win is NU's second-straight sweep and improves its record to 13-9 overall, 4-6 in Big Ten matches.
Purdue (12-8, 5-5), which was swept by Illinois on Friday, dropped to fifth in the Big Ten.
"This was a great weekend for us," said head coach Keylor Chan. "The team played at the level I expect of them. No one person really stood out and everyone contributed. The key was we played as a team for a great pair of wins."
The Wildcats were dominant in game one, holding a .383 attack percent to Purdue's .032. Senior Leah Delcourt (Rock Island, Ill/Rock Island) picked up where she left off from Friday's win and killed two of three (.667). Jill Buschur (New Bremen, Ohio/New Bremen) also hit well, landing four of seven (.571). The 'Cats quickly took the momentum and it showed on the scoreboard. After an even start, Northwestern was able to put together two five-point runs en route to a 30-17 victory.
The Boilermakers came back in the middle game with them topping NU's one block with four. While Northwestern and Purdue were close in hitting percentage, the Boilermakers were able to go up on the Wildcats by as many as six, leading 25-20 late in the game. Erika Lange (Orland Park, Ill./Carl Sandburg) started the Wildcats' comeback, serving for four straight points to help force two game points. Tied at 30, Buschur killed a Purdue serve, bringing up Iwona Lodzik (Tarnobrzeg, Poland, Tarnobrzeg). She served the final two points, including one of her five match service aces, for the 32-30 win.
The Wildcats were helped by Purdue's .108 hitting percentage in the third, also outblocking the Boilermakers 5-3. Lange was seven of 13, while Delcourt was three of five. Drew Robertson (Long Beach, Calif./Long Beach Poly) ended the night with 50 assists and tied for the lead with 10 digs and four block assists for the 30-26 win.
Delcourt ended the night with a career-high .500 hitting percentage and four block assists. Lange was 13 of 25 and Buschur was 10 of 20. Lodzik was 18 of 40 with 10 digs.
"This is a turning point for us, and we hope to build off this," said Chan.
Lodzik added, "Our team is back. We really needed these wins, and I think they boosted our confidence."
Northwestern now eyes .500 when traveling to Penn State and Ohio State next weekend. Game time is set for 8 p.m. CST.
