EVANSTON, Ill. - The Northwestern women's basketball team had four players score in double figures Thursday night, but it was not enough as 25th-ranked Illinois raced to an 87-58 win in Champaign.
The Wildcats (6-16, 3-7 Big Ten) gave the Illini (18-8, 8-4 Big Ten) a challenge for most of the first half, but a 14-2 run over an eight-minute span proved to be too much to overcome. That allowed Illinois to expand a 22-17 lead to 36-19 en route to a 40-26 halftime lead.
The Illini then scored the first six points of the second half, building the lead up to 20 points, and Northwestern got no closer than 15 points after that.
Tami Sears recorded a double-double for the Wildcats, scoring 12 points and snaring 11 rebounds while also dishing out four assists. Dana Leonard led the way with 13 points, while Leslie Schock also scored 12 and Emily Butler added 10. Leslie Dolland also had a nice outing for the 'Cats, with seven points and nine boards.
For Illinois, Susan Blauser went 11-for-14 from the field and led all scorers with 22 points, while Allison Curtin added 19, Tauja Catchings scored 17 and Shavonna Hunter added 12.
The Wildcats are back in action on Sunday, playing at Ohio State in a game that starts at 1 p.m.
