Claire Pollard took over as Northwestern's fourth head women's tennis coach prior to the 1999 season, and, in 27 seasons at the helm of the program, has brought the 'Cats from a regular contender in the Big Ten to a national powerhouse. She has compiled a record of 534-196 during her time at NU, leading the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament in 24 of 26 seasons, including a run of 23 straight appearances from 1999 to 2022 (save for the canceled 2020 Championship).
Pollard's tenure began with a bang, as the Wildcats claimed 11 consecutive Big Ten championships from 1999-2009. The 'Cats added two more regular season crowns in 2012 and 2018, bringing Pollard to 13 regular season titles in 27 seasons in Evanston. Her teams saw even more success in the postseason, as Northwestern also strung together 13 straight Big Ten Tournament titles from 1999-2011. All said, Pollard claimed at least one Big Ten title in each of her first 16 seasons at the helm, capped off with her 2014 Tournament title.
Heading into the 2025-26 season, Pollard's all-time conference record stands at an impressive 241-41. The mark was helped by her teams' record 81 straight wins against Big Ten opponents from April 2004 to April 2010. Pollard also began her Northwestern tenure by going 45-0 in postseason play against conference foes (Big Ten Tournament and NCAA Championships) from 1999 onward before finally falling to Purdue in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament in 2012.
During her nearly three decades in Evanston, Pollard has coached NU to several program records, including its first No. 1 national ranking, back-to-back No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Championships in 2008 and 2009, and consecutive ITA National Indoor Team championships in 2009 and 2010. The 2009 season saw Pollard guide the 'Cats to a program record 29 wins, also setting the team high for single-season winning percentage (.935) and shutouts (25) that season.
In both 2008 and 2009, Pollard's squads ended the year with a No. 2 final team ranking - the highest in Northwestern women's tennis history. Those account for two of eight top-ten final rankings the Wildcats have claimed under Pollard, as they have also recorded final finishes of fifth (2005), seventh (2010), eighth (2006 and 2007), ninth (2001), and 10th (2004). Northwestern has reached at least the round of 16 in the NCAA Championships in 12 of Pollard's 27 seasons, increasing the program's number of total NCAA appearances along the way to 33.
Under Pollard, NU has produced 59 individual NCAA qualifiers, 10 Midwest Regional singles champions -- most recently Kate Turvy in 2012 -- four Regional doubles champion pairings and 69 All-Big Ten honorees. Eighteen Wildcats have earned All-American honors under Pollard, and the team featured at least one honoree in nine straight seasons from 2003-2011.
In addition, Pollard has coached eight players to Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors and eight to conference Player of the Year honors, including three of only five players in Big Ten history to earn both awards in the same season. In 2003, Cristelle Grier became the first NU player and just the second in conference history to earn both accolades, preceding Audra Cohen (2005) and Maria Mosolova (2008). Mosolova also became the second Wildcat ever to earn multiple Big Ten Player of the Year honors with her second selection in 2009, joining Grier, who won the award three times in 2003, 2005 and 2006.
In 2006, Pollard coached Grier and Alexis Prousis to the program's second-ever individual national title. The pairs' NCAA Doubles Championship was the first for Northwestern since Katrina Adams and Diane Donnelly in 1987, and it made Pollard just the second coach in NCAA history to capture a doubles title as both a player and a coach.
Her success with the 'Cats has netted Pollard numerous regional and national honors, including five Wilson/ITA Midwest Region Coach of the Year awards. She has also been named Big Ten Coach of the Year in five seasons, including back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009. Her 29-2 season in 2008 saw her to Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year honors.
Prior to her time at Northwestern, Pollard held head coaching positions at her alma mater, Mississippi State University (1990-91), and Lamar (1994-98), where she led both the men's and women's teams. During that time, the women's team posted a 64-49 overall record, while the men's team finished 1997 with a 13-8 mark, its best since 1986. Between the two, Pollard spent a brief stint at Chris Lane Tennis Club in England from 1991 to 1994.
A decorated collegiate player, Pollard won the 1989 NCAA Doubles Championship as well as back-to-back Southeastern Conference Indoor and Outdoor Doubles Championships. An All-American and Academic All-American, she was named Mississippi State's Female Athlete of the Year in 1989. Pollard is the Bulldogs' leader for doubles victories in one season with 39 in 1988-89 and in a career with 111 (1986-1989). She also ranks fifth in career singles wins with 67 and is tied for 10th in season singles victories (23, 1987-88).
In 1989, Pollard participated in the Wimbledon and U.S. Open Championships. She graduated magna cum laude from Mississippi State with a bachelor of science in fitness management and received her master's from Mississippi State in sports administration.
A native of Surrey, England, Pollard served for four years on the Midwest Region of the NCAA Tennis Committee and as chairman of the NCAA Committee for two years. She resides in Evanston.
