Since 2016, Will Byrne has served as a field hockey coach and the Recruiting Coordinator at Northwestern University. Contributing to one of the most successful and decorated eras in program history, Byrne has helped lead NU to three National Championships in five straight Final Four appearances. In his role, Byrne leads and executes a comprehensive recruiting strategy, identifying elite domestic and international talent while supporting the development of student-athletes within a championship-driven culture.

From Colorado, Byrne began his coaching career in 2004, serving as Junior Varsity coach for the Fort Collins Fire, before spending five seasons as Varsity Assistant at Colorado Academy. Over the next decade, he coached at a variety of high schools and clubs in Colorado,Β Washington D.C., and Amherst, Mass., before entering the Division I world. In 2015, Byrne joined the University of Massachusetts as a volunteer assistant under the direction of former NU associate head coach Carla Tagliente.

Over the past decade, Northwestern has established itself as a national powerhouse, capturing three NCAA Championships (2021, 2024, 2025) and making five consecutive appearances in the national title game. The Wildcats have also dominated the Big Ten, compiling multiple conference championships, most recently culminating an undefeated regular and postseason sweep of Big Ten play in 2025. Alongside Head Coach Tracey Fuchs and Associate Head Coach Georgia Holland, Byrne has been named a part of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA)Β Coaching Staff of the Year four times (2021, 2023, 2024, 2025).

In his tenure, Northwestern has produced 22 NFHCA All-Americans, seven Big Ten Scholars of Distinction, sixΒ USA Senior National Team members and two Olympians. Byrne was pivotal in the recruitment of Honda Award Finalists Bente Baekers, Lauren Wadas, Annabel Skubisz, as well as 2024 and 2025 Honda Award Winner Maddie Zimmer.

A key component of Byrne's recruiting success has been his ability to identify and attract top international talent, expanding Northwestern's global footprint. His efforts have helped bring standout players such as Baekers, Ilse Tromp and Laura Slamanca to Evanston, each contributing high-level experience and skill to the Wildcats' roster. This international pipeline has complemented strong domestic recruiting, creating a diverse, dynamic and championship-caliber team.

In addition to work at the Division I level, Byrne has been actively involved with USA Field Hockey at both the senior and junior levels. He has served as a video analyst for the U.S. Women's National Team during multiple international competitions, including the FIH Pro League (2018, 2020, 2024) and the 2019 Pan American Games, contributing to match preparation, opponent scouting and performance analysis at the highest levels of the sport. Byrne has also worked within the junior national system, serving on staff with the U-16 U.S. National Team since 2023, including an international tour to Valkenswaard, Netherlands in 2026, competing against the best youth programs in Europe.

Byrne is also actively engaged in the advancement of the coaching profession through his work with the NFHCA. He has served on the All-Region Selection Committee, helping recognize and honor top collegiate talent across the country. In addition, he serves as Chair of the NFHCA Film Exchange and Technology Committee, where he plays a leadership role in improving how programs utilize video analysis, data,Β and technology to enhance performance and collaboration across the sport.

Beyond the collegiate and national team landscape, Byrne is deeply committed to growing the game of field hockey at the grassroots and adult levels. He actively organizes and facilitates adult play opportunities in the Chicago area, creating inclusive environments for athletes of all backgrounds to stay involved in the sport. Byrne also manages the annual co-ed tournament, the Chicago Cup, which brings together teams from across the region for high-level competition and community building. Through these efforts, he continues to expand access to the game and strengthen the broader field hockey community.
