EVANSTON, Ill. — No. 68 Northwestern concluded its 2025 dual season home slate with a pair of wins, defeating Purdue 4-0 on Friday night and No. 62 Indiana 4-3 on Sunday morning.
The Wildcats (15-10, 3-7 Big Ten) recorded their first undefeated weekend in Big Ten play this season.
"We've been really close," Head Coach Arvid Swan said. "We had a chance to win three of the last four matches prior to this weekend and didn't get it done, which falls on me. This was really good. We had a really good week of practice, and keep showing up. Credit to our team."
Junior Cyrus Mahjoob and junior Ethan Schiffman both posted 2-0 records in singles, with Mahjoob clinching both matches. Teaming up in doubles, the two also went 2-0 over the weekend.
Against the Boilermakers (4-14, 0-9 Big Ten), Northwestern notched its first sweep of a Big Ten opponent since the 2023 season.
"I thought we had consistency up and down the lineup, one through six singles and one through three doubles," Swan said. "I thought we came to play in every spot, which was great."
The Wildcats took an early lead by claiming the doubles point. Junior Greyson Casey and sophomore Carter Pate, the No. 18 doubles team nationally, used an early break to register a 6-3 win at the No. 1 doubles spot, moving to 17-0 on the season. Mahjoob and Schiffman followed suit at the No. 2 position with a 6-4 victory.
Pate recorded his 14th singles win of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 result at the No. 1 singles position. Schiffman also tabbed a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 4 to put Northwestern just one point away from victory.
Mahjoob delivered for the Wildcats, clinching the match with a 6-4, 6-3 decision at the No. 2 slot.
Pate said that the team felt a sense of urgency to leave the facility with its sixth straight victory over Purdue, a streak dating back to 2021.
"The team was motivated," Pate said. "We've had a rough couple of matches, so I think just getting the team in the right spot was the most important thing. Everyone was playing well."
Returning to the court to face the Hoosiers (9-9, 3-6 Big Ten) two days later, Northwestern secured its first ranked victory of the season in comeback fashion.
"Our guys played with a lot of passion, care for each other," Swan said. "I thought it was really good in terms of support outside and inside the court. It was a really competitive effort for the team."
After dropping the No. 2 doubles match, Northwestern triumphed in an electrifying doubles point. Playing at the No. 1 position, Mahjoob and Schiffman overcame a 6-3 deficit in the tiebreak, saving three match points and winning five consecutive points en route to a 7-6 (8-6) victory. At the No. 3 slot, Casey and senior Chad Miller fought back from being down an early mini-break in the tiebreak to secure a 7-6 (7-3) victory.
"Me and Schiff, we've played together all season. We really trust each other, and we looked at each other and said, 'Come on, this moment. This is our moment,'" Mahjoob said of his doubles comeback.
Schiffman gave Northwestern a 2-0 lead by earning a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. However, Indiana won at the No. 6, No. 4, and No. 5 positions to take a 3-2 lead.
At the No. 2 spot, Casey evened the match at three apiece by prevailing 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3). This result marked the highest position in the lineup that Casey has won at in Big Ten play during his career.
With the match left in the hands of Mahjoob, he proved clutch once again. Clinching the match for the second time in three days, Mahjoob came back from a set down in a 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 result at the No. 1 slot.
"You look around, and you have all these guys supporting you, cheering your school, cheering your name — it's really something special," Mahjoob said.
Northwestern makes a West Coast trip next weekend, traveling to face No. 26 USC on Friday, April 10, at 5 p.m. CT and No. 22 UCLA on Sunday, April 12, at 1 p.m. CT.
"Last week was not a good feeling," Casey said. "After these two wins, we should have a little bit more confidence going into UCLA, USC to get it done."
