'Cats Split Saturday Doubleheader Rematches

2/21/2026 4:26:00 PM | Softball

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Facing off against Southeast Missouri and No. 8 Arkansas for the second day in a row, Northwestern earned its second-straight doubleheader split on Saturday afternoon.

To open the afternoon, the Wildcats took down SEMO, 12-1, in six innings for their third run-rule victory of the season. In the second game of the doubleheader, 'Cats dropped a 7-0 decision to the eighth-ranked Razorbacks.

After falling behind 1-0 against SEMO via a one-out home run in the bottom of the first inning, Northwestern responded with 12 unanswered runs and retired the final 17 Redhawk batters of the game to lock up the win.

Marina Mason earned the win in the circle for the 'Cats, retiring her final 14 batters faced while allowing just one hit and one run while striking out seven over 5.0 innings. It marked Mason's fourth outing of the season in which she has struck out at least five batters. The first-year right-hander from Brentwood, Tennessee leads the team with 34 strikeouts on the season.

Kaylie Avvisato turned in a career performance in the win over SEMO, going 2-for-4 with a career-high five RBI, a homer, a triple and two runs scored. Avvisato evened the score in the top of the third inning with a two-out RBI triple to drive in Kelsey Nader. One batter later, Avvisato came around to score off a fielding error to give NU the lead once and for all.

The 'Cats added two runs in the fifth inning after a pair of RBI-singles from Nader and Emma Raye to extend the lead to 4-1. Nader led all players in the game with three runs scored, going 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Raye turned in her third multi-hit effort of the season, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Northwestern broke the game open in the top of the sixth inning, scoring eight runs headlined by a two-out grand slam from Avvisato to make it 9-1.

Eight-consecutive Wildcats reached base during their two-out rally in the sixth inning–including a pinch hit RBI-double from Teagan McCue, her first-career RBI, immediately followed by a pinch hit two-RBI double from Signe Dohse the next at-bat to extend the lead to 12-1.

The Wildcat bats were stymied by Arkansas in the back half of the doubleheader in a 7-0 setback. Avvisato led the 'Cats once again at the plate, reaching base in all three of her plate appearances as she finished 2-for-2 with a walk.

Signe Dohse tossed 6.0 innings for the 'Cats, allowing only two earned runs. After the Razorbacks got on the board with three runs in the bottom of the first inning, Dohse strung together four-straight scoreless innings to keep the game within striking distance. Arkansas opened up its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with four runs following a two-out Wildcat error.

Northwestern will close out its weekend at the Razorback Invitational on Sunday with one final meeting against No. 8 Arkansas. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm CT, with the game being streamed on SEC Network+.
