Northwestern Falls On The Road At No. 23 Maryland, 4-1

‘Cats back home Monday against Washington on Big Ten Network

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (September 26, 2025) – Peter Riesz netted his third goal of 2025, as Northwestern (5-3-1, 1-2 B1G) dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 23 Maryland (6-0-2, 2-0-1 B1G) this evening at Ludwig Field in College Park, Md.

How It Happened
The Wildcats came out on the front foot, nearly opening the scoring less than a minute in when Joe Suchecki forced a point-blank save from Maryland goalkeeper Laurin Mack.  Playing back in his home state, Bryant Mayer made a bid to get Northwestern on the board in the 10th minute, unleashing a screaming blast that rang off the far post.

Maryland struck for a pair of goals across an 84-second span near the half-hour mark.  Leon Koehl slotted home from the penalty spot in the 30th minute to make it 1-0, followed by an Albi Ndrenika strike that doubled the Terrapins' advantage, 2-0.

Just six minutes after Ndrenika's goal, Northwestern provided a response as it looked to seize momentum heading into halftime.  Italo Addimandi sent a cross from the left side towards the center of the box that was chested down and into the path of Riesz by Omar Jallow.  Riesz showed no hesitation, rifling his one-time effort past Mack to trim the Maryland lead to 2-1 at the intermission.

Doug Hainer made a bid to put the 'Cats back on level terms in the 62nd minute, taking aim with a right-footed strike from the edge of the 18-yard box that forced a diving stop out of Mack. Shortly after, Mayer tested the Maryland netminder off a corner kick, but saw his headed effort collected.

Sadam Masereka reestablished a two-goal advantage for the hosts in the 64th minute, converting from six yards out to push the margin to 3-1.  The Terrapins went on to add a fourth in the 77th minute en route to extending their season-opening unbeaten run to eight games.

Looking At The Numbers
- Riesz's 37th-minute strike saw him tally his third goal of the season, a total that ranks second on the Wildcat roster.
- Addimandi picked up his second assist of the year on Riesz's goal, while Jallow notched his first helper of the campaign.
- Northwestern finished with advantages in shots (16-15), shots on goal (7-6), and corner kicks (8-4).
    - Tonight marked just the second time this season that Maryland has been outshot.
- Josue Hangi finished with three saves in his first action as a Wildcat.
