European Ryder Cup Captain and Northwestern alumnus Luke Donald finalized his squad for the upcoming 2025 Ryder Cup this morning, selecting fellow Wildcat Matt Fitzpatrick as one of his captain's picks.
Donald enters his second Ryder Cup as a captain, previously competing as a player in 2004, 2006, 2010, and 2012. The former World Number One captained Europe to victory in 2023 at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Rome, Italy. Donald's squad led wire to wire, winning over the United States by a score of 16.5-11.5.
Fitzpatrick will be making his fourth career appearance at the Ryder Cup, making his debut representing Europe in 2016, while also being selected in both 2021 and 2023.
"Nobody has statistically been as good as Matt has in the last three or four months," Donald said. "I challenged Matt to go play the last two events in Europe and get into the last group on Sunday. The last two weeks just showed us everything Matt has."
After taking eighth place at the PGA Championship in May, the Englishman finished the PGA Tour season strong, taking four top-10 finishes including fourth at both the Open Championship and the Genesis Scottish Open.
Fitzpatrick did exactly what Donald asked in the month of August, taking a pair of top-10s at the Betfred British Masters (6th) and the Omega European Masters (5th).
"There's a lot of belief after the last few weeks," Fitzpatrick said. "I felt like I turned my game around from the start of the season. To finish the Ryder Cup running with the form that I've shown is obviously a real positive. It'd be lovely to continue that into Bethpage."
The 2022 U.S. Open Champion joins a European squad that is retaining 11/12 players from their dominant win in 2023, teaming up with fellow major winners Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Shane Lowry, as well as the 2025 FedEx Cup Champion in Tommy Fleetwood.
Widely regarded as one of the most challenging golf courses in the world, the Ryder Cup will be played at Bethpage Black in New York for the first time in the course's history. Running from September 26-28, the event kicks off with foursomes and four ball matches the first two days before concluding with singles matches on Sunday.
