Wildcats Shut Out Richmond in Season Opener, 4-0

8/31/2025 1:42:00 PM | Field Hockey

RICHMOND, Va. - No. 1 Northwestern field hockey (1-0) used a dominant second-half performance en route to blanking Richmond (1-1), 4-0, in its regular season opener on Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field in Richmond, Va. Grace Schulze dazzled in her Wildcat debut, scoring a pair of goals, as Northwestern enjoyed advantages across multiple statistical categories.

Maddie Zimmer and Ashley Sessa each had one shot in the period, but were denied by the Richmond defense and Spider goalkeeper Amanda Cimillo. Northwestern dominated possession for the vast majority of the quarter, but both teams remained scoreless.

Juliana Boon tallied her first collegiate save to open the second quarter, keeping the Spiders off the board after a shot from Jess McMeeking. With four minutes to go in the half, Ilse Tromp lined up a strong pass to Laura Salamanca, who fed to Schulze. The graduate student notched her first goal as a Wildcat to give Northwestern a 1-0 lead that it would carry into halftime.

Just thirty seconds into the second half, Zimmer set up the assist for Sessa's first goal of the season as Northwestern doubled its lead, 2-0. Less than two minutes later, Schulze claimed her second goal of the day, extending the lead to 3-0 after another Zimmer assist. The 'Cats fended off a pair of Spiders' corners before Olivia Bent-Cole saw her attempt redirected by Aerin Krys for a 4-0 'Cats advantage.
Schulze paced Northwestern on the offensive end with two goals, while Zimmer was credited with two assists. Sessa unleashed a team-high four shots. Boon played a complete game in goal with three saves in her collegiate debut. The Wildcats outshot the Spiders, 16-8, and 8-3 in shots on goal. Northwestern also led in corners, 7-3.

With the victory, the 'Cats are now 18-2 all-time against current Atlantic 10 Conference members, and 5-0 since 2018 in road season-openers. Northwestern is now 4-0-0 all-time against Richmond. The Wildcats are back in action on Monday, September 1 against VCU in Richmond, Va. The 12 p.m. CT matchup will be streamed on ESPN+.
