
Bates and Mayfield Podium, Punch NCAA Tickets at B1G Championships

EVANSTON, Ill. - Evan Bates and Maxx Mayfield are headed back to the NCAA Championships later this month in Philadelphia after both wrestlers secured podium finishes and automatic qualification at the 2025 Big Ten Championships over the weekend. Mayfield finished sixth at 165 lbs, while Bates earned a seventh-place finish at 197 lbs.
Mayfield will return to the NCAA Championships for the third straight season after earning his berth on Saturday afternoon. Following a first-round setback, Mayfield won two straight bouts in consolation action to lock in his spot on the podium. He delivered a 5-1 decision over Andrew White (Rutgers) and upset third-seeded Christopher Minto of Nebraska in a thrilling 8-1 decision en route to his sixth-place finish.
Bates blanked a pair of opponents on Saturday to punch his ticket to Philadelphia for the NCAA Championships. In his opening round matchup, Northwestern's 197-pounder won a 10-0 major decision over Ben Vanadia (Purdue) to advance on. Later on, Bates beat Maryland's Chase Mielnik in consolation action via a 15-0 technical fall that secured his spot on the podium. It'll be back-to-back trips to the NCAA Championships for Bates, who received an at-large bid in 2024.
The NCAA will announce at-large bids for all weight classes on Tuesday, March 11, with brackets and seeding to follow the following evening. The 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships will take place in Philadelphia, Pa., from Thursday, March 20, to Saturday, March 22.
