Wildcats Drop Mary Nutter Opener, 3-2

Cathedral City, Calif. – Northwestern dropped a narrow 3-2 decision to Seattle U on Friday evening to open its weekend at the Mary Nutter Classic.

Trailing 2-1 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, Northwestern fought back to even the game and head to the bottom of the frame. With one out and runners on second and third, the Redhawks' winning run came around to score on an obstruction call at home plate to decide the game.

Six Wildcats recorded hits in the game, five of which were doubles. The 'Cats got on the board first in the second inning on a sequence of back-to-back doubles by Bridget Donahey and Izzy Cunnea. It marked Donahey's second double and third extra-base hit of the season, as well as Cunnea's scond RBI on the year.

Signe Dohse made her second career start in the circle and allowed just five hits and two runs, only one of which was earned. Renae Cunningham entered in relief and allowed just one hit in seven batters faced, surrendering a one unearned run.

The Redhawks tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning on a two-out error to third base. In the bottom of the fifth inning, they took a 2-1 lead as the result of a two-out double.

Grace Nieto led off the top of the seventh inning with an opposite field double to left field, her second double on the season. After reaching third base on a passed ball, Nieto came around to score on a fly ball from Kansas Robinson that bounced off the left fielder's glove.

Northwestern is back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Utah and Saint Mary's, beginning at 4:30 pm CT / 2:30 pm PT. Action will be streamed live on FloSoftball.
