Signe Dohse Earns First-Career Win, ‘Cats Split Saturday Doubleheader in LSU

2/15/2025 4:25:00 PM | Softball

BATON ROUGE, La. – Northwestern earned a split in its Saturday doubleheader at the Purple & Gold Challenge hosted by LSU, taking down UT Arlington, 6-1, in game one before falling to No. 7 LSU, 8-0, in game two.

Signe Dohse made her first-career start in game one and tossed a gem, allowing just two hits and one run in 5.0 innings of work. After allowing a walk and a single in two of her first three batters of the game, Dohse retired 12 of the final 14 batters she faced. In total, the redshirt first-year from Hopkins, Minnesota threw just 58 pitches to 17 batters while recording 15 outs.

Grace Nieto paced the Wildcats' offense against the Mavericks, tying her career highs in hits (3) and RBI (2), going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. It already marks Nieto's second three-hit game of the season, as well as her first multi-RBI game since driving in two in the Wildcats' win over Oakland to open the NCAA Evanston Regional on May 20, 2022.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, the Wildcats immediately responded in the bottom of the frame to even the score. Kelsey Nader doubled down the right field line in NU's first at-bat of the game, and Riley Grudzielanek came through with a tw-out RBI-single to bring the score to 1-1.

The 'Cats jumped ahead in the second inning thanks to a two-out single from Nieto to bring home Ayana Lindsey. Lindsey also jumpstarted a rally in the fourth inning with a leadoff double, eventually coming around to score on a Kansas Robinson sacrifice fly. Lindsey finished the game with three runs scored, tying her career high.

Kaylie Avvisato continued her red-hot collegiate start, driving in two runs with a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth inning to cap off a three-run inning for the 'Cats, matching their highest scoring inning to date this season. Avvisato, who also recorded a hit later in the afternoon against No. 7 LSU, is now hitting a team-best .414 (12-for-29) on the season.

Renae Cunningham closed out the game against UT Arlington, tossing the final 2.0 innings while allowing no hits, no runs and striking out a pair. Cunningham also entered in relief against the seventh-ranked Tigers and allowed two unearned runs in 2.2 innings of action.

Northwestern has now faced a ranked opponent in six of its first nine games to start 2025, already surpassing the Wildcats' number of ranked matchups (5) from the 2024 regular season. The 'Cats will wrap up the weekend with a rematch against UT Arlington on Sunday morning, with first pitch scheduled for 9 am CT.
