Wildcats Celebrate Senior Weekend with Impressive Showings vs. Penn State, UChicago & Southern Indiana

EVANSTON, Ill. – Northwestern swimming and diving returned to action on Friday and Saturday in the team's first competitions of 2025. On Saturday, both the men's and women's teams defeated both Penn State and UChicago. On Friday evening, the 'Cats were flawless against Southern Indiana winning all 26 events. It was also the team's final home meets of the season.
On Saturday, two pool records were broken including Cade Duncan (42.75) in the 100 freestyle and Tyler Lu (1:45.23) in the 200 individual medley.
With family and friends in attendance, the program honored seven seniors or graduate students who will graduate this year. Those student-athletes include Graysen Bernard (Canada), Kenisha Gupta (India), Alex Ispas (Romania), Lu (United States), Justine Murdock (United States), Ashley Strouse (United States) and Nikki Venema (United States).
"These were two important events for us and they were additional steps in the right direction," said director of swimming and diving Rachel Stratton-Mills. "We head to Wisconsin next week and we need to keep building, but I was proud of our team. We set a couple of pool records and saw some personal bests achieved. Importantly, we were able to celebrate our seven fantastic seniors and it was great to see Tyler Lu achieve one of those pool records on his special day."
Penn State & UChicago
On Saturday in a double-dual meet, Northwestern won 21 of 30 swimming events, including three of four relays, and three of four diving events. On the men's side, NU outscored UChicago 231-63 and PSU 172-127. On the women's side, the 'Cats defeated UChicago 247-50 and PSU 207-88.
In addition to the pool records, personal bests were achieved by Stuart Seymour (45.84) in the 100 backstroke and Chris Leung (47.32) and Connor Schuster (47.55), both in the 100 butterfly.
Individual swimmers who won multiple races include Seymour (100 backstroke and 50 freestyle), Zoe Nordmann (500 and 1000 freestyle) and Sophie Martin (100 breaststroke and 200 IM). Swimmers who won races include Alexander Rousseau (1000 freestyle), Sydney Smith (200 freestyle), Lilly Mehok (200 butterfly), Diego Nosack (200 butterfly), Venema (50 freestyle), Lindsay Ervin (100 freestyle), Duncan (100 freestyle – pool record), Claire Mehok (200 backstroke), David Gerchik (200 backstroke), Maggie Papanicholas (200 breaststroke), Leung (100 butterfly), and Lu (200 IM – pool record).
On the diving side, 'Cats won three of the four events, highlighted by Adam Cohen and Caroline Li. Cohen won both the 3 meter and 1 meter. Li bested her opponents to win the 1 meter.
Southern Indiana
On Friday night, in a warm-up meet ahead of Saturday, the team dominated, winning all 22 swimming events and all four diving competitions. Both final scores for the men and women were identical, 199-42.
An impressive 14 different swimmers won at least one race. Lu and Josh Stapes each won two events. Three different divers won at least one competition, with Kyle Ly winning twice.
NEXT UP: The swimming and diving teams will travel for the rest of the season. Next weekend, the team heads to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the Badgers on Saturday, January 18 at Noon CT. The entire 2024-25 schedule can be found here and here.
