‘Cats move to 2-0 through season’s opening weekend

EVANSTON, Ill. (August 25, 2024) – Northwestern (2-0) continued its perfect start to 2024 this afternoon, picking up a 2-1 win over local rival DePaul (1-1) amidst sweltering conditions at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.

How It Happened
Both sides were presented with chances early on a day where temperatures hovered in the low 90s.  DePaul looked to strike just over 11 minutes in when Keegan Pace slid a tight-angle attempt towards an open Wildcat net, only to see a sliding Nigel Prince clear the ball off the line and keep the game scoreless.  Brandon Clagette countered with a chance of his own just two minutes later when his one-timer rung off the near post.

Northwestern continued to apply pressure as the opening stanza wore on.  Clagette found space on the right side in the 22nd minute, pulling his shot just wide of the far post.  Tyler Glassberg found himself in the mix shortly after when a Blue Demon defender deflected his blast towards an empty net.

The 'Cats were rewarded for their persistence just past the half-hour mark.  Jayvin Van Deventer collected the rebound off a Collin McCamy free kick before lofting a ball towards the back post.  Italo Addimandi found himself on the end of the feed, heading back across goal to stake Northwestern to a 1-0 lead it would carry into halftime.

It took the 'Cats all of 12 minutes to double their advantage coming out of the intermission.  After winning possession near midfield, Peter Riesz drove into the attacking third and connected with Christopher Thaggard, who sent Jason Gajadhar into the 18-yard box.  Gajadhar finished it off, scoring from just over six yards out to extend the Wildcats' lead to 2-0.

Down to 10 men for the final 6:42 of regulation, DePaul added a hint of late drama when Logan Finnegan's 86th-minute blast deflected in to trim the margin to 2-1.  Northwestern slammed the door shut the rest of the way, holding the Blue Demons without a shot for the remainder of afternoon as it closed out another victory before its home crowd.

Looking At The Numbers
- After picking up an assist in his collegiate debut on Thursday against Green Bay, Addimandi netted the first goal of his career this afternoon.
- Gajadhar notched his second career game-winning goal in the 57th minute.
            - The Toronto, Ontario, Canada native has five goals to his name as a Wildcat.
- As was the case in Thursday's win over Green Bay, Northwestern held a sizable advantage in both shots, 15-5, and shots on goal, 6-2.
            - Clagette, McCamy, Thaddaeus Dewing, and Joe Suchecki each tallied two attempts, with McCamy putting both of his shots on target.
- This afternoon's matchup took on a physical tone from the onset, as the two sides combined for 23 fouls, seven yellow cards, and one red card.
