Son, Suchecki tally goals in shutout win

EVANSTON, Ill. (August 22, 2024) – First-half goals from Paul Son and Joe Suchecki highlighted a dominant showing by Northwestern (1-0) as it rolled to a 2-0 win over Green Bay (0-1) in its 2024 regular season opener this evening at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.

How It Happened
Northwestern stepped on the gas early on a perfect night for soccer on the shores of Lake Michigan.  Just over two minutes in, Son took advantage of a Green Bay turnover, intercepting a pass inside the 18-yard box before firing home at the near post from 12 yards out to put the 'Cats on top, 1-0.

After seeing the better of the action as the first half wore on, Northwestern struck again in the dying minutes of the frame.  Following a feed from Jayvin Van Deventer, Italo Addimandi whipped a cross into the box that connected with Suchecki.  The Wildcat debutant did the rest, ripping his attempt past Phoenix goalkeeper Alvaro Rodriguez to send the hosts racing into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Northwestern continued to push ahead coming out of the intermission, searching for a third goal.  Tyler Glassberg let fly with a pair of attempts over a three-minute span, the second of which forced a diving stop out of Rodriguez at his near post.  Christopher Thaggard came within inches of a highlight-reel strike with just a quarter of an hour remaining, unleashing a curling right-footed shot from the left side of the box that was stopped only by Rodriguez's far post.

Added insurance would not be needed on the evening however, as Northwestern prevailed in its regular season opener for the second time in as many seasons.

Looking At The Numbers
- Son's opening goal marked his third collegiate goal and first career game-winning tally.
- Suchecki added his fourth career goal late in the first half, coming on as a substitute to score in his first appearance as a Wildcat.
- Northwestern closed the night with an impressive 18-4 advantage in shots.
            - Addimandi finished the night with a team-best three attempts, while Glassberg put two of his efforts on goal.
- The 'Cats turned in a comprehensive defensive performance, not allowing Green Bay a shot on goal.
- Rodriguez finished with four saves in goal for the Phoenix.
