No. 1 Northwestern Falls to No. 2 Boston College, 14-13, in National Championship

CARY, N.C. – No. 1 Northwestern fell just short of a second-straight national championship, falling to No. 2 Boston College, 14-13, on Sunday afternoon at WakeMed Soccer Park.
In her last collegiate game, the NCAA's all-time leading scorer Izzy Scane led the Wildcats with five goals, four of which came in the second half. Sophomore Madison Taylor added a hat trick along with one assist, while Erin Coykendall scored two goals of her own.
Scane finished the season with 88 goals on the season (third-most in a single-season in program history, trailing only herself in 2021 and 2023), while Taylor finished with 83 goals (fifth-most in a single season in NU history). Scane and Taylor's 171 combined goals on the season mark the most-ever in a single season by a Northwestern duo.
How It Happened
Northwestern opened the game on a 6-0 run, holding Boston College scoreless for the first 20+ minutes of game action. The 'Cats outshot the Eagles, 11-3 in the first quarter, powered by two goals apiece from Coykendall and Taylor in addition to one from Dylan Amonte and Mary Schumar.
Boston College outscored the Wildcats 6-2 in the second quarter to cut the lead to 8-6 at halftime. The Eagles outshot the Wildcats, 9-4, in the second frame and held a 6-3 advantage in draw controls.
Northwestern opened the lead back to three in the third quarter with goals from Taylor and Scane, however BC closed the third quarter with consecutive goals to cut the lead to 10-9 headed to the fourth quarter.
Boston College grabbed its first lead of the game with 9:39 remaining in the fourth quarter. Northwestern cut the lead to one on multiple occasions in the last five minutes with goals from Scane, but could not capitalize on a pair of shot attempts in the last minute to even the game.
