Wildcats Dominate Terps to Clinch Series Victory

EVANSTON, Ill. – Behind a dominant outing on the mound from Kyle Potthoff, Northwestern baseball powered past 11-1 to clinch the series on Saturday afternoon at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park. After a scoreless top of the first inning from Jack Dyke, Preston Knott led off the Wildcat first with a solo home run, his second leadoff home run in four games, putting the 'Cats up 1-0. In the bottom of the second inning, Lorenzo Rios doubled home Vince Bianchina to double the Wildcat lead. In the bottom of the fourth with runners on the corners, Rios doubled again, bringing Bennett Markinson and Tony Livermore home to extend the Wildcat lead to 4-0.

Northwestern broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth with seven runs. After singles by Knott and Owen McElfatrick, Jackson Freeman reached on an error, scoring Knott to add on to the lead. Next batter, Markinson singled, plating Freeman and McElfatrick to put the 'Cats up 7-0. With the bases loaded and one out, Rios was hit by a pitch, scoring another run to give NU an eight-run advantage. Griffin Arnone reached on a fielder's choice, bringing Liolios home. In his second at-bat of the inning, Knott hit a two-RBI single, scoring Arnone and Livermore to cap off the scoring and put the 'Cats up 11-0. Jack Dyke opened the game on the mound for the Wildcats, tossing three scoreless innings, allowing three hits and striking out a pair. Kyle Potthoff (3-2) earned the win for the 'Cats with six strong innings of one-run ball. Potthoff surrendered four hits and two walks, recording five strikeouts. Game Notes
  • Northwestern secured its first series win over Maryland since May 12-14, 2017, taking two of three from the Terps in College Park.
  • 10 runs marks Northwestern's largest margin of victory in a Big Ten game since defeating Purdue 11-1 on May 14, 2022.
  • Northwestern's seven runs in the fifth inning are its most in an inning since putting up seven on May 2, 2023 in a 17-7 win over UIC.

Logan Koester (4-4) was charged with the loss, allowing nine runs, five earned, on seven hits and two walks in 4.1 innings pitched.
