‘Cats begin competition inside XFINITY Center on Saturday morning
EVANSTON, Ill. (March 8, 2024) – With the regular season portion of its schedule complete, Northwestern wrestling (1-9, 1-7 B1G) raises the curtain on the postseason this weekend when it heads to College Park, Md. for the 2024 Big Ten Wrestling Championships.
The University of Maryland will play host to this year's edition of the league meet inside XFINITY Center. Action begins with Session I at 9 a.m. (CT) on Saturday morning, with Session II following at 4 p.m. (CT) later in the afternoon. Session III kicks off at 11 a.m. (CT) on Sunday ahead Session IV, which gets underway at 3:30 p.m. (CT).
Big Ten Network will provide coverage of Sessions I, II, and IV, while action from all four sessions can be accessed through B1G+.
The trio of Trevor Chumbley, Troy Fisher, and Evan Bates enter the weekend as the top-seeded Wildcats.
Seeded ninth at 157 pounds, Chumbley comes into the postseason on a roll, having picked up three straight bonus-point victories to close the regular season. The St. Charles, Ill. native will be looking to build off his success at last season's Big Ten Championships, when he rattled off three straight wins on the backside of the bracket en route to placing fourth overall and securing his first berth to the NCAA Championships.
Like Chumbley, Fisher wrapped up the regular season with three consecutive wins, none bigger than a 7-3 upset of No. 11 Jacob Nolan of Binghamton on February 16. Out of Garden Plain, Kan., Fisher is seeded ninth is his first season competing at 184 pounds.
Bates caught fire to end the year at 197 pounds scoring wins in each of his last three Big Ten outings. The Chesterton, Ind. product picked up a gritty 2-0 decision win over No. 33 Gabe Sollars of Indiana in the Wildcats' 19-18 victory on February 18. Seeded eighth, Bates came within one victory of a trip to the NCAA Championships in his Big Ten Championships debut last season, falling in the ninth-place match at 184 pounds.
