SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Northwestern wrestling closed non-conference dual season with a win on Thursday night, taking down Cal Poly, 29-14, on the road. Six 'Cats picked up wins in the team victory, which moved Northwestern to 2-1 overall.

The 'Cats received an early boost from Massey Odiotti (133 lbs) and Giosue Hickman (141 lbs), who contributed a pair of pins to put the 'Cats up 12-3 after the first three bouts. For Odiotti, the victory was his first at 133 lbs in dual meet action. Hickman, a true first year, impressed in his debut dual appearance at the collegiate level, pinning Korbin Shepherd at the 3:27 mark.

Jacob Bostelman also came out on top of his first career dual appearance for Northwestern. Wrestling at 157 lbs, the sophomore used a takedown late in the second period to account for three of his four points in the 4-0 decision over Cal Poly's Gavin Fernandez. With Sam Cartella's 9-0 major decision at 141 lbs, the 'Cats had expanded their lead to 19-3 by the halfway mark.

No. 20 Maxx Mayfield (165 lbs) and No. 13 Evan Bates (197 lbs) locked down a Wildcat victory in the second half with a technical fall apiece. Mayfield kept his undefeated dual record intact with a wire-to-wire win over Cash Stewart. Mayfield jumped out to an early 9-2 lead with three takedowns in the first period alone, then racked up another four in the next three-and-a-half minutes to cruise to a 21-6 victory by technical fall at the 6:22 mark. Bates then matched Mayfield with seven takedowns of his own at 197 lbs. Paired with a reversal, he wrapped up his win, 25-10, in just over six minutes.

Next up for the 'Cats is their final tournament of the season as they return home for the 60th Annual Midlands Championships next weekend in Hoffman Estates. Action from NOW Arena is set to kick off at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 29, and continue the following morning.
