Senior places 14th overall in women’s 6k race

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (November 1, 2024) – Ava Earl secured All-Big Ten accolades for the first time in her career as Northwestern cross country opened postseason competition this morning at the Big Ten Conference Cross Country Championships in Champaign, Ill.  Led by Earl's showing, all five members of the Wildcats' top five set new 6k personal bests.

Northwestern accumulated 201 points to place seventh in the final team standings.  Oregon (33 points) finished 27 points clear of Washington (60 points) for the team title, while the Ducks' Silan Ayyildiz (19:13.6) secured individual medalist honors.

Earl paced the Wildcat attack on a cool morning at the Orange & Blue Golf Course.  The Girdwood, Alaska native set a new 6k personal best for the second time in as many outings, running 19:42.2 en route to placing 14th overall as she earned Second Team All-Big Ten distinction.  Earl's time from this morning is a 32-second improvement from her two-week-old personal best set at the Bradley Pink Classic on October 18.

Chloe Wellings joined Earl in putting up a 30-plus second personal best.  Wellings, out of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, surged across in 20:05.7 to claim a 33rd-place finish.  Maddy Whitman also landed inside the top 50, taking seven seconds off her previous top time as she took 47th at 20:15.6.

Ava Criniti continued her outstanding redshirt first-year campaign, placing 54th in her postseason debut with a time of 20:20.7, a 12-second personal best.  Jackie Holman set a new 6k personal best for the third straight outing, clocking in at 20:24.9 to round out the top five for the 'Cats in 58th.

Northwestern is back in action in two weeks when it visits Peoria, Ill. for the NCAA Midwest Regional on Friday, November 15.
