Shearer sweeps sabre titles as ‘Cats win four events
EVANSTON, Ill. (October 15, 2024) – Natalie Shearer swept the sabre events, highlighting an impressive showing by the Northwestern University women's fencing team over the week at the Remenyik ROC/RJCC inside Ryan Fieldhouse. In total, the 'Cats collected four event titles and totaled 18 podium finishes.
Shearer got off to a fast start on Saturday in the junior women's sabre, breezing through her five pool bouts ahead of an unblemished 5-0 run through the tableau en route to the event title. She was joined on the podium by Alex Chen (T-3rd) and Amy Lu (5th).
Shearer returned to the strips on Sunday afternoon for the Division I women's sabre. After finishing 4-1 in pool action, the Lake Forest, Calif. native knocked off four higher-seeded foes in the tableau to complete her sweep of the weapon. Led by Shearer's effort, five Wildcats earned podium finishes in the event, a quintet that also included Kira Erikson (2nd), Adele Bois (T-3rd), Megumi Oishi (T-3rd), and Nisha Hild (7th).
Reigning Central Collegiate Fencing Conference (CCFC) Epee Champion Karen Wang looked to pick up right where she left off last season in winning the Division I women's epee. Athina Kwon earned a runner-up finish in the event, while Amanda Pirkowski earned a share of third place in her Wildcat debut, finishing alongside Anna Damratoski.
Northwestern was also represented on the podium in the junior women's epee. Christina Liu tied for sixth, while Emma Ning placed eighth.
