Ponce de León makes three saves to secure fourth shutout of 2024

EVANSTON, Ill. (October 15, 2024) – Northwestern (7-5-1, 1-4-1 B1G) extended its unbeaten run to three games this evening as it played visiting Wisconsin (6-4-2, 1-4-2 B1G) to a 0-0 draw at Northwestern Medicine Field at Martin Stadium.

How It Happened
Rafael Ponce de León recorded his first of three stops in the opening stanza just over six minutes in when he leapt to tip Ryan Quintos' headed effort over the bar.  The Wildcat netminder was called back into action again in the ninth minute, as he comfortably collected a shot from Dean Boltz.

Slowly but surely, Northwestern grew into the game and began to ask questions of the Wisconsin backline.  Just past the half-hour mark, Brandon Clagette unleashed a screaming, right-footed blast from 25 yards out that narrowly sailed wide of the far post.

Ponce de León came up with arguably his finest stop of the night in the 42nd minute of play.  With space just outside the 18-yard box, Birgir Baldvinsson took aim at the near post, only for Ponce de León to make an outstretched stop that ultimately sent the game to halftime all square at 0-0.

Northwestern saw the better of the action across the final 45 minutes, outshooting the Badgers by a 6-3 margin in the second half.  Michael Ramirez forced an early save out of Wisconsin goalkeeper Matisse Herbert less than two minutes in, while Clagette headed wide of goal in the 62nd minute.  The 'Cats continued to mount pressure as time wound down, generating multiple corner kicks inside the closing 20 minutes, but were unable to find a breakthrough as the two teams split the points on the evening.

Looking At The Numbers
- Ponce de León finished his night with three saves, securing his fourth clean sheet of the season.
- Northwestern closed the night with a 9-6 advantage in shots.
    - The 'Cats held Wisconsin without a shot on goal in the second half.
- Clagette, Ramirez, and Joe Suchecki led Northwestern on the night with two shots apiece.
