COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Northwestern women's tennis improved to 4-1 on the season Sunday with a victory over Rice in their second of two matches at the ITA Kickoff weekend in College Station, Texas.
The duo of Maria Shusharina and Britany Lau blanked their opponents 6-0 to start off doubles action. Sydney Pratt and Elisa Van Meeteren followed with a 6-4 victory at the #2 position to secure the doubles point for the Wildcats.
Christina Hand put the 'Cats out to a 2-0 lead from the #3 singles position, notching a 6-2, 6-3 win for her fourth individual victory of the season. Rice then picked up a pair of singles victories themselves, but Jennifer Riester countered with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 win at #6 to put Northwestern back on top.
With the #1 position going the way of the Owls, the match came down to Sydney Pratt at #5. After splitting the first two sets with Rice's Nithesa Selvaraj, Pratt booked a dominant 6-1 win in the final set to clinch victory for herself and for the 'Cats.
With ITA Kickoff Weekend behind them, Northwestern will next hit the courts on Sunday, Feb. 4, when they'll face off with Georgia Tech in Atlanta. First serve of that match is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
